appears to have surpassed the white, non-Latino population, according to new U.S. Census estimates.

The American Communities Survey, which is conducted every year and is not considered official, showed the Latino population has reached 11.9 million people — 40 percent of the statewide population — compared to the 11.6 million white, non-Latinos living in the state — who make up 39 percent.Mexican Americans make up the vast majority of Latinos in Texas, with 9.7 million people. Puerto Ricans are the second-largest population with nearly 254,000 people.

The new data reflects the possible culmination of a decades-long trend in which people of color have gradually come to account for more and more of Texas’s population.
