Preliminary vote last week signals trouble for a top priority of the governor.

Gov. Greg Abbott has made school choice a top priority this session. Every Texas parent should have the ability to make such a choice, and the state should respect the religious freedom of those families when they make that choice.

Gov. Greg Abbott will be buying dinner for a group of advocates from around the state who are coming to Austin on Tuesday to support the legislation, according to the conservative think tank the Texas Public Policy Foundation. A voucher-type policy to send public funds to private schools is also a priority of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who heads the Senate.

This year, Abbott has exerted tremendous pressure to try to break the logjam. He announced vouchers as a priority policy during his State of the State address in February, and he has traveled the state visiting private schools and delivering speeches calling for school choice policies.
