Democratic presidential candidate former Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, arrive to speak at a town hall event in Des Moines, Iowa, on Feb. 2, 2020. The Democratic National Committee has decided to allow new states to bid for the coveted status, which has long belonged to places like Iowa and New Hampshire, in an effort to kick off the nominating process in states that better reflect the diversity of the broader electorate.
The Texas party had been considering a bid, according to a state party spokesperson, Angelica Luna Kaufman. She said last week that the party had decided it would submit an application. However, it could be a tricky process and starts out with uncertain odds. Moving up the primary date would ultimately be up to the Legislature, where Republicans are in charge.
In 2020, Iowa had its contest on Feb. 3, followed by New Hampshire on Feb. 11, Nevada on Feb. 22 and South Carolina on Feb. 29.
