The Texas Cavaliers River Parade is the first of Fiesta’s three big parades.
The Fiesta San Antonio Commission Executive Committee proceeds along the San Antonio River during the Texas Cavaliers River Parade on Monday, April 24, 2023. The Grand Marshal for the parade was Astronaut Charlie Duke, who was 36 years old when he walked on the moon during the Apollo 16 mission in 1972. The parade benefits the Cavaliers’ charitable foundation, which in the past year donated $1 million to children’s charities. The theme of the parade was “Fantastic Voyages.
Now in its 78th year, the Texas Cavaliers River Parade was led by astronaut and retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Charles M. Duke Jr., 80. Duke, who lives in New Braunfels, became theThe “Fantastic Voyages” theme celebrated human exploration and discovery — both terrestrial and extraterrestrial. Rise Recovery, which helps teens and young adults facing alcohol and drug addiction, was this year’s charitable nominee.

San Antonio 5th-grader wins Texas Cavaliers River Parade Art ContestAll winners received scholarships to art camps on behalf of UTSA Southwest. Their vibrant artwork will get the chance to be displayed on a VIA bus. Grand Prize Winner, Fiona O'Dell, won Whataburger for a year and will be honored on a float in the Texas Cavaliers River Parade and a scholarship to UTSA Southwest. In addition, the Texas Cavaliers and its sponsors will donate a total of $46,000 to art programs at the schools where the winners and runners-up attend.
