Improving Texans rookie LB Christian Harris 'progressing day by day' ahead of run-heavy Browns
Texans rookie linebacker Christian Harris practiced with limitations for the second straight day on Thursday, and while position coach Miles Smith says the third-round pick is “progressing day by day,” there still remains uncertainty whether Harris will play in Sunday’s game against the run-heavy Browns.
Browns running back Nick Chubb ranks third in the NFL with 1,039 rushing yards through 11 games, and Cleveland’s 17 total runs of 20-plus yards leads the league. Houston’s last-place rush defense has shown moderate improvement in the rebuilding franchise’s last two games, which has been backed by the gradual development of Harris in the defensive scheme.
Harris spent the first six games on the injured reserve with a hamstring injury, and the former Alabama linebacker struggled in his debut. He held the league’s third-highest missed tackle rate among linebackers during his first three starts , according to Pro Football Focus, and he’s significantly improved the rate to the 27th-lowest during his last three starts.
“As we go forward, he’s making more and more of the plays we expect him to make,” Smith said of Harris, who has 30 tackles, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble in six games. “Occasionally, there’s plays that he’s making that other linebackers probably wouldn’t be able to make just based on his elite athleticism. As we keep going, we expect him to make more and more of the plays and truly show the type of level he can play at.
