Texans request interview with Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka
Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka is the latest assistant the Texans have requested permission to interview in their latest head coaching search.The Texans have requested to interview Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka for their head coaching vacancy, a person with knowledge of the situation said.
Kafka, 35, played quarterback for seven different NFL teams before beginning his coaching career in 2016 as a graduate assistant at Northwestern. He spent five seasons with the Chiefs, first as an offensive quality control coach, then quarterbacks coach, then passing game coordinator for his final two seasons in Kansas City. Kafka then joined Brian Daboll’s staff in New York this season, and the playoff-bound Giants averaged 21.5 points per game, which ranked 15th in the league.
Kafka marks the sixth candidate the Texans have formally requested for an interview. The franchise has also submitted interview requests for 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen.
Texans chairman and CEO Cal McNair is notably more involved in this hiring cycle. General manager Nick Caserio handled the last two hiring processes, and after firing both David Culley and Lovie Smith after just one season, McNair shifted away from his normally hands-off approach. McNair and Caserio together built the list of candidates that were sent to the NFL’s offices.
“This search is very important, and we need to get it right,” McNair told the Chronicle on Monday. “That’s why I want to be a bigger part of it. Nobody’s happy with where we are. We didn’t expect to be where we are. So we’re disappointed in that, and we’re going to work very hard to get the right decision, and I’m going to make sure I’m part of it.”
