Texans rookie cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. will miss his third straight game while sidelined with a hamstring injury, the team announced Friday. The franchise made official what the Texans coaching staff already projected during the week. Stingley did not participate in any practices and is still managing a soft-tissue injury that coach Lovie Smith has categorized as “minor.”

Still, Smith spoke Wednesday about how Houston’s secondary will have to prepare for Sunday’s game against the Browns without Stingley. Former Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson is scheduled to make his debut with the Browns after serving an 11-game suspension for violating the NFL’s conduct policy following over two dozen allegations of sexual assault, and the three-time Pro Bowler is expected to bolster a Cleveland passing game that has been average without him.

Desmond King, Houston’s usual nickel safety, is once again poised to start in Stingley’s absence. Tavierre Thomas has filled in for King the last three games, and in tandem with cornerback Steve Nelson, they’ll be tasked with matching up with four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Amari Cooper, who has 57 catches, 792 yards and seven touchdowns through 11 games.

“ is a one receiver. He was a great college player. There’s a reason why when you look at his bank account, he’s getting paid the way he is,” Smith said Wednesday. “It’ll be a challenge without Derek . That was the case last week. That’s life in the NFL too. Our guys Des , Steve Nelson and the rest of the guys have to step up.”
