Tesla's controversial Full Self-Driving technology will set you back a significant chunk of change now.
Customers who have placed their order for the"Full Self-Driving" suite of software and hardware before September 5 will be grandfathered in under the current $12,000 cost of the system, and anybody after that will have to fork up $15,000 going forward.
Earlier this month, Nader released a statement which claimed that Tesla's Full Self-Driving was"dangerous," with"malfunctions every eight minutes," according to Nader's cited research. The statement was released after weeks of news reports regarding NHTSA's ongoing investigation into the safety and road-worthiness of Tesla's FSD and Autopilot systems.
So, why the price bump? Well, Musk has repeatedly said this would come. FSD began life at $5,000, and as the technology has grown in capability over the years, so has the price. Over the years, it's bumped from $5,000 to $7,000, and then $10,000, then $12,000, and now sits at $15,000. It's not clear what specific reason Tesla has to hike up the price for the second time this year. The company may be about to attempt an expanded release of its Autosteer system, which assists in steering within a clearly marked lane and uses traffic-tracking cruise control, for city streets; it's currently only usable in highway traffic.
