John Allan says the firm is 'doing its bit' to help customers cope with high inflation.
The chairman of Tesco, the UK's biggest retailer, says he cannot forecast when rises in food prices will peak.
He said soaring food prices meant there were people who were "very, very, very hard pressed", adding that Tesco was trying to help customers cope by showing them ways in which they can economise. Mr Allan is backing Bite Back 2030, a youth-led charity movement campaigning for a fairer food system. A Department for Education spokesperson said: "Over a third of pupils in England now receive free school meals in education settings, compared with one in six in 2010, and we have made a further investment in the National School Breakfast Programme to extend the programme for another year, backed by up to £30m."to cope with rising costs, because it could drive up the cost of living even further.
Mr Allan said he couldn't comment on the expected figures but hit back at any suggestion the business was making too much money at the expense of customers.
