JUST IN: GOP-controlled Tennessee House expels 2 Democrats in an emotionally charged session over their gun reform protest after the Nashville school shooting
Tennessee’s Republican-controlled House of Representatives has voted to expel Rep. Justin Pearson, a week after he and two other Democrats led a gun reform protest on the House floor. The House earlier expelled Rep. Justin Jones over that protest, which followed a deadly mass shooting at a Nashville school. A vote to expel the third Democrat involved, Rep. Gloria Johnson, failed. The vote over rules violations for Pearson was 69-26. Johnson’s vote was 65-30.
” As he left the Capitol on Thursday, Jones said he is not sure what his next steps are following his expulsion. “I will continue to show up to this Capitol with these young people whether I’m in that chamber or outside,” Jones told reporters.

The resolution declared the three had participated in “disorderly behavior” and “did knowingly and intentionally bring disorder and dishonor to the House of Representatives.” Expelling lawmakers is an extraordinary action inside the Tennessee Capitol. Just two other House members have ever been ousted from the chamber since the Civil War.
