Tennessee Becomes First State To Restrict Drag Shows
Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee signed a bill Thursday that will restrict public drag show performances—the first state to pass such legislation—after a wave of criticism from conservative commentators who dubiously argue drag-related events sexualize children, though opponents say the bill is “part of a large-scale attack on the LGBTQ+ community.”Copyright 2023 The Associated Press.
A first violation of the law—which will take effect July 1—would carry a maximum prison sentence of 11 months and a possible maximum fine of $2,500, while any further violation could result in one to six years of imprisonment and a fine of up to $3,000. Though the bill does not explicitly say “drag show,” it restricts “adult cabaret performances,” which are defined as events featuring “male and female impersonators” along with “topless dancers, go-go dancers, exotic dancers [and]CNN the legislation is meant to “protect children from sexually explicit drag shows that are inappropriate for minor audiences.”
State Rep. Gloria Johnson argued against the bill, suggesting the state already has laws restricting obscenity in front of children,
