If you ask any Watford fan to write out a list of their favourite strikers the name of Paul Wilkinson may not feature near the top of many, but the forward holds one record without equal in the club’s history.
Signed from Nottingham Forest in August 1988, the former Everton player went on to achieve the distinction of being the Hornets’ top scorer for three consecutive seasons – and he went on to repeat the feat at Middlesbrough. Wilkinson found the back of the net 55 times in 159 appearances in all competitions at Vicarage Road – including a subsequent loan spell – but he is perhaps not better remembered by more supporters because there was nothing particularly eye-catching about his game apart from flick-ons and scoring goals.
