The 'green building code' is optional, could boost costs for developers and doesn't reward those who participate. Officials worry it will be a dud.

Tempe officials are not happy with a draft version of the city’s new environmentally-friendly"green building code," a crucial piece of Tempe’s plan to be carbon neutral by 2050.

Kay believes that approach will also give industry players time to become more comfortable with the initiative. “That's slower than what we envisioned,” said Adams, who chaired the committee that requested the green code with former Councilmember Lauren Kuby. “Perhaps didn’t make it clear enough that we wanted this to start as soon as possible. We'll have to revisit the timeline.

"It's building this green building movement so that eventually more and more cities can get on board, and we can move towards having some kind of regionally adopted code," he said. “I haven't heard that before about just one staffer, but if council makes it a priority — which they have — then I think adequate resources need to be given to make this happen,” Adams said. “I'm a strong supporter of incentives. I want to have the council revisit that.”
