Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is the first theatrical TMNT series since the live-action Michael Bay films, which concluded with the second entry Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows in 2016. 2014's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and its sequel were both moderate box office successes, but the films were panned by critics and TMNT fans alike. Because of this, the franchise was abandoned after the second film.
The universe of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is huge, with its number of characters and storylines rivaling almost any Marvel or DC superhero. This is why the TMNT franchise has been much better served by TV shows in the past, as it allows them to fully explore these beloved arcs.
