UPDATE Juvenile girl identified as person shot and killed in Salt Lake City this afternoon
Police say they found the girl critically injured when they responded to the home in the 1600 Block of West Wright Circle just after noon. Officers and paramedics began lifesaving efforts, but the girl died at the scene.
Before officers arrived at the home, the shooter had left. Police spotted a person who matched the shooter's description boarding a Utah Transit Authority bus where he was later arrested and the weapon was recovered.The names of the victim or suspect have yet to be released, and police have not said what led to the shooting.
Edison Elementary, Parkview Elementary and Glendale Middle School were placed on Secure Alert immediately following the shooting, meaning all exterior doors were locked and no one was allowed to enter or leave the school buildings."We let them know that there was a situation in the near vicinity and they are the ones who elected to put their schools on lockdown but there is no threat," said Det. Ben Nielsen with the Salt Lake City Police Department.
