Dr Mary Bousted, joint general secretary of the National Education Union (NEU), told i that potential strike action would see teachers walk out for 'sporadic chunks of days' over the coming two months
that close on Monday 9 January and Wednesday 11 January respectively, with the results expected to be announced later next week.that the teaching unions will attempt to coordinate strike action for maximum impact, meaning almost all schools across England and Wales could shutter for intermittent periods over the next two months.
Under legislation introduced by the Government in 2017, union ballots must have a turnout of at least 50 per cent and strike action must have the support of at least 40 per cent of all members — not just those who voted. It means a turnout of 50 per cent of a union’s membership would require 80 per cent of voters to support strike action for the threshold to be met.
“I’m not saying that we’d rule anything out, but I don’t think that would be what teachers would do,” Dr Bousted told. “Our members don’t want to go on strike and they don’t want to disrupt an exam. They will not stop children taking exams — that’s really clear.” “If they want to resolve this dispute then it’s in their hands. They’ve got all the rest of this week and then two weeks where we have to give employers’ notice — so we’re very much saying that we can stop whatever we’re doing and come in and negotiate.”
