A teacher was shot by a six-year-old boy in class as she tried to take the gun away, a parent has said
Abby Zwerner, 25, was rushed to hospital after the shooting at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, on Friday.
Ms Zwerner had just finished reading students a story and was about to go to an art class when the child pulled the handgun.“She was going to confiscate it, and that’s when he shot,” said Brittaney Gregory, whose son was in the class at the time of the attack.Describing how her child is "still in shock" and has been having nightmares, she told the Washington Post: “He normally sleeps in his own room but the night of the shooting he came into my room.
Richneck Elementary School, which has around 550 pupils, will stay closed all week to give students and parents "time to heal".

Mayor: Teacher Shot by 6-Year-Old ‘Red Flag for the Country'A Virginia teacher who was critically injured when she was was shot by a 6-year-old student in Newport News is showing signs of improvement. Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones said Saturday that the teacher’s condition is “trending in a positive direction” as she remains hospitalized. Authorities say the boy shot and wounded the teacher in a first-grade classroom on Friday at Richneck Elementary School. Police Chief Steve Drew said the shooting was not accidental and was part of an altercation. No students were injured. Jones declined to release additional details about what led to the altercation.
