A disciplinary hearing has taken place
An academy teacher was dismissed after failing to report a serious safeguarding disclosure, a disciplinary hearing has heard. Jason Steel was sacked from Retford Oaks Academy in March 2020, following an investigation conducted by the Teaching Regulation Agency which found that he had showed a lack of insight for the potential risks to two students in December 2019.
He also admitted to speaking to another pupil about the disclosure after Nottinghamshire . In a statement of agreed facts, Mr Steel accepted that “each of the allegations amount to unacceptable professional conduct and conduct that may bring the profession into disrepute”.The panel considered that Mr Steel’s poor judgement could potentially damage the public’s perception of a teacher.
The panel added that, taking into account the nature and severity of the disclosure, there was no evidence to suggest that Mr Steel was acting under extreme duress, such as physical threat or significant intimidation and, in fact, he assumed that someone else had reported the safeguarding concern. John Knowles said: “I consider that a three-year review period is required to satisfy the maintenance of public confidence in the profession.
Without a successful application, Mr Steel remains prohibited from teaching indefinitely. He has a right of appeal to the King’s Bench Division of the High Court within 28 days from the date he was given notice of the order.
