The new music video for 'The Man,' directed by Taylor Swift, doubles down on the feminist themes that made the song an anthem from her latest album, 'Lover.'
On Thursday morning, the pop star debuted her new video for “The Man,” a standout fromthat doubles as a musical middle finger to the male establishment. Directed by Swift, the video expands on the song’s feminist themes and defiant lyrics.
“I’m so sick of running as fast as I can / Wondering if I’d get there quicker if I was a man,” she sings in the chorus, the camera focusing on a generic-looking guy in a suit inconsiderately man-spreading his legs on the train. “And I’m so sick of them coming at me again / ‘Cause if I was a man, then I’d be the man.
“They’d say I played the field before I found someone to commit to / And that would be OK for me to do,” she speculates in the first verse as her unrecognizable masculine alter ego barks orders at smiling employees. “Every conquest I had made would make me more of a boss to you.”
