The province\u0027s residents are left to speculate about the state of the COVID\u002D19 pandemic — and the reasons for the move to monthly updates.
Saskatchewan’s chief medical health officer Dr. Saqib Shahab announced in a news release on Thursday that the province was further reducing the available information on the COVID-19 pandemic by moving to monthly reports.
Saskatchewan stayed in the forefront in the restriction of information that could help save lives, as the first province to make this move.A little more than a year before Thursday’s news release, Premier Scott Moe also referenced a “great Saskatchewan summer” as he announced all COVID-19 restrictions would be lifted on July 11, 2021.
The benefit of less frequent reporting remains a mystery, leading to speculation that the chief factor here is to hide the reality of the pandemic. There’s no identifiable down side to continuing with weekly or daily reporting, other than it makes the province look bad with its high death rate. On July 21, a three-week report covering June 26 to July 16 will be issued and then the first monthly report will be posted online on Aug. 18, covering July 17 to Aug. 13.
