Tension with China has escalated under Taiwan's government, and the island will in the future have to choose between 'peace and war,' former Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou said at the end of a landmark visit to China

Beijing has been stepping up its political and militaryTsai and her government reject that and say only the island's people can decide their future.

Ma said Taiwan could share a "common political basis" with China, which would be in the best interests of the people of Taiwan. He visited historic sites in several cities including Wuhan, where he met Song Tao, the head of China's Taiwan Affairs Office.
