Taiwán suspendió vuelos, transporte ferroviario y servicios de ferry junto con clases y eventos al aire libre e instó a los trabajadores a quedarse en casa el domingo mientras el tifón Haikui azotaba la parte sur de la isla.
El tifón tocó tierra en el condado de Taitung, en la costa este del Pacífico, alrededor de las 3 p.m. del domingo, con vientos sostenidos de 155 kilómetros por hora y ráfagas de 190 km/h .
La llegada de Haikui se produjo mientras el tifón Saola continuaba debilitándose mientras avanzaba a lo largo de la costa china, donde 900.000 personas y 80.000 barcos pesqueros habían sido trasladados a un lugar seguro. La mayor parte de Hong Kong y partes de la costa continental habían suspendido los negocios, el transporte y las clases.
Entre los eventos cancelados en Taiwán se encuentran un festival de globos aerostáticos en la región central de Taichung, varios conciertos al aire libre, eventos artísticos y un partido de béisbol. También se cerraron parques nacionales y carreteras peligrosas en el centro montañoso de la isla.
