Sexually transmitted infections rose again in 2021, after a slight dip during the first year of the pandemic, according to a CDC report.
“This is really only showing you a very small slice of the pie in terms of what’s going on with STIs in the United States,” Dr. Ina Park, a professor of family and community medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, said of the new report. The dip in overall STI cases in 2020 was due to fewer cases of
that year, according to the new report. Though cases increased in 2021, they have not yet reached their pre-pandemic levels.“It reflects folks not routinely screening for chlamydia,” said Park. “Chlamydia, especially in women, is almost always asymptomatic.”The infection — which can be easily treated with antibiotics — had fallen to a low of around 31,000 cases in 2000, and has surged nearly sixfold, to nearly 177,000 cases in 2021. The last time syphilis cases had exceeded that number was 1950.
