Cases of the potentially deadly disease have risen this year compared to figures in 2022.
Scientists have flagged the rise in tuberculosis, with the UK Health Security Agency recently releasing a warning over the increase in cases in England compared to case numbers recorded this time last year.
A total of 1,175 cases of tuberculosis across the country in the three months to September, according to the latest data, compared to 1,121 cases in the same period during 2022. Tuberculosis is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The disease is most contagious when it affects the lungs, spreading from between humans due to prolonged exposure with an infected person.
The disease mainly impacts the lungs but can affect any part of the body, including the glands, bones and nervous system.
