Authorities in the Australian state of New South Wales announced a four-week extension to its capital Sydney’s ongoing Covid-19 lockdown
177 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, a slight rise from the previous day, with a majority of the infections reported in Sydney and its surrounding areas.
At least 46 of the new cases were infectious when they had interactions with the community, which almost guarantees dozens more undetected infections. The state also reported the death of a woman in her 90s from Covid, making her the eleventh person to die in Sydney’s current outbreak. The unrelenting rise in cases prompted the state government to extend the lockdown—already more than one month long and which was scheduled to end in three days—by an additional four weeks until August 28.she was as “upset and frustrated” as everyone else that they have not been able to get the case numbers down.
Berejiklian added that the lockdown extension will be paired with stricter enforcement efforts including greater police presence to crack down on violations.
