President Donald Trump threatened to incite a trade war with Sweden to release U.S. rapper A$AP Rocky from prison in 2019, according to the country's justice and home affairs minister.
During an interview with a Swedish paper on Thursday, Morgan Johansson said Trump had warned the Swedish government at the time that if it did not release Rocky, then he would issue new"trade restrictions."Trump allegedly approached the European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union, for support as well, Johansson added.
"This story demonstrates how important it really is to stand up for our legal principles and not to take our democracy for granted," Johansson said, according to the Independent."If you can try and do something like this against Sweden, what will you then try and do to slightly weaker countries that don't have the European Union behind them?"
The rapper, whose birth name is Rakim Mayers, was arrested and detained in Stockholm for over a month in July 2019, along with two members of his entourage, on charges of aggravated assault following an altercation. Rocky was eventually found guilty of assault but was given a two-year suspended sentence and allowed to return to the United States.
"We do so much for Sweden but it doesn't seem to work the other way around. Sweden should focus on its real crime problem!" Trump tweeted at the time.Trump had been a vocal critic of the arrest at the time, calling publicly for his release.
