Tuesday afternoon, city public safety officials urged the offenders to halt the pranks.

Police responded en masse. Roads were cordoned off. The caller told police Monday night that someone was shot in a downtown Hoboken residential building. But police and other first responders found no evidence of a shooting, nor any trouble whatsoever at the building on Grand Street between First and Newark streets. Instead, they determined, the incident was a “swatting” prank, city public safety spokeswoman Marci Rubin said, referring to callers reporting a bogus crime to law enforcement that elicits a large response.

Tuesday afternoon, city public safety officials urged the offenders to halt the pranks and others to report them, calling the pranks dangerous — for the safety of both the residents of the targeted buildings and the public at large, Rubin said.
