Police responded en masse. Roads were cordoned off. The caller told police Monday night that someone was shot in a downtown Hoboken residential building. But police and other first responders found no evidence of a shooting, nor any trouble whatsoever at the building on Grand Street between First and Newark streets. Instead, they determined, the incident was a “swatting” prank, city public safety spokeswoman Marci Rubin said, referring to callers reporting a bogus crime to law enforcement that elicits a large response.
Tuesday afternoon, city public safety officials urged the offenders to halt the pranks and others to report them, calling the pranks dangerous — for the safety of both the residents of the targeted buildings and the public at large, Rubin said.
