British Army soldiers are facing growing tensions at their last remaining permanent base in Africa because of the unsolved murder of a local woman
“In the set-up of a club, you find them [British soldiers] really dominating the locals. They would not respect the place,” said the anonymous Laikipia resident.
Kenya’s National Assembly has indicated approval for the agreement’s renewal, but also voted for an amendment to explicitly try British soldiers for crimes such as murder committed in the country and to compel the army training unit to contribute more to the community. The Laikipia government shares some concerns over the current defence co-operation agreement with the UK.
He added that implementation of the intergovernmental liaison committee referred to in the agreement “has in the past not been practical”, adding: “We can only hope that this will change.”
