Avoid the building
Two streets in a residential area of the seaside town have been closed. Police have placed cordons on Orme Street and Woolman Road.
Around 2.10pm, officers from Lancashire Constabulary were alerted to the smell of gas. Following reports from the National Grid, officers shut off access to the two roads.A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: "Please be aware we have closed Woolman Road and Orme Street due to a suspected gas leak. Please avoid the area and when we can we will provide some further information."
LancsLive understands that the smell of gas in the area came from an empty property on Orme Street. Emergency services have worked to secure the building and are reportedly leaving the scene.Kevin Hegarty, a spokesperson for Cadent, Lancashire’s gas emergency service, told LancsLive: “The national gas emergency service received a report of a smell of gas in Orme Street. Our engineers were on-site quickly and traced it to an empty property.
"We needed the assistance of the police and fire service to gain access and then, once inside, made everything safe. We are now preparing to leave. If you smell gas, always call the national gas emergency service on 0800 111 999 immediately, day or night. All calls are recorded and may be monitored."
