, at around 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Brockton Police Department officers were called out to a house near Cresent and Lyman streets for reports of a woman bleeding in the driveway. When officers arrived at the house, they found the woman with obvious signs of trauma to her head. She was pronounced dead at the scene. She was later identified as Veronica Goncalves, 48., Goncalves’ ex-boyfriend, Joao Correia, 56, was found in the house covered in blood.

While he spoke with investigators, Correia allegedly admitted to having ingested battery acid. He then had a medical episode. He died at the hospital just a few hours later.BPD contacted the Massachusetts State Police, which was assigned to their office for an investigation. The investigation included search warrant executions, interviews, canvasses and reviewing video surveillance. The DA’s office said that the investigation found that Goncalves was targeted by Correia.
