A lifelong hockey player and Hershey Bears fan, Hunter Leisey, 23, is working to get back in playing shape after his second bout with leukemia.
Cancer survivor Hunter Leisey drops puck at Hershey Bears Fight Cancer NightWhen Hunter Leisey dropped the puck to start Sunday’s Hershey Bears game, it marked a big step in two significant personal battles.
“It’s definitely surreal to actually go out and drop it myself,” said Leisey, who also spent the game’s warmup period on the Bears’ bench, watching the players go through their pre-game exercises.“In your stand, you look at the guys and you’re like ‘they’re pretty big’ but when you step out on the ice and they’re right beside you, there’s some big guys out there,” Leisey remarked.
But nearly two years ago, in January of 2021, the disease came back. Leisey went through another round of grueling treatments, including a stem cell transplant that wiped his body’s immune system, confining him to a hospital room for over 70 days. “It’s really hard to get back right now,” Leisey said of his physical power. “But I feel better every time I touch the ice. I’ve got to get through this year and hopefully next year come back and be stronger.”
“I can’t complain that I’m back at school playing hockey, got some strength back,” he continued. “It’s going to take time, but I definitely can’t complain with where I’m at, compared to where I was.”
