Gambling firm says BBC show star has seen a flurry of bets placed and have halved the odds on them winning

Leading global online betting and gaming brand Betway has today announced it has slashed the odds in half of Krishnan Guru-Murthy to win Strictly Come Dancing. The rank outsider has seen some money put down on him winning the BBC Saturday night show - with viewers clearly thinking the 53-year-old Channel 4 newsreader could be in with a chance.

Betway said it has halved the odds from 100/1 to 50/1. Betway spokesman Chad Yeomans, said: “In the first round of dances, Krishnan really surprised a few people with how seriously he is taking the competition and he certainly performed better than his initial odds of 100/1 would suggest. He only scored one point lower than One Show presenter Angela Scanlon who is currently at much shorter odds of 13/2.

“He is clearly and visibly trying and that makes a huge difference to the viewers. Many outsiders down the years accepted they had little chance and seemed content with an early exit. However, Krishnan recently revealed he lost two stone before appearing on the show and he obviously wants to go far in this year’s competition.

“His score in his first dance was actually higher than Bill Bailey got in his first week on the show percentage-wise, as there were only three judges in that series. Will Krishnan do a Bill Bailey and go all the way? Only time will tell, but if he continues to improve he could very well be this year’s surprise package for the Glitter Ball trophy!”

Bill saw off competition from Maisie Smith, HRVY and Jamie Laing to win the Glitterball trophy – ensuring his professional partner Oti Mabuse achieved a Strictly first of winning two series in a row. At 55 years old, he also became the oldest winner in Strictly history after starting out unfancied - but really came good.Ellie Leach: 7/1Eddie Kadi: 25/1Les Dennis: 100/1
