Houston ISD state-appointed superintendent Mike Miles introduced the DYAD program at the district's schools this year, where contractors come to the school to teach programs like photography, gardening, boxing, golf, yoga, spin, videography, piano, guitar.
As part of the program, sixth-graders at Lawson during one class in September used rakes, shovels and other gardening tools — with the assistance of their instructor — to prepare soil and start the early stages of a garden, where they’ll eventually be planting a variety of vegetables that are expected to ripen by the end of the school year.
“For fitness and nutrition, what I like is I do a lot of fun things, and in dance, I get to learn about different kinds of moves I can do,” Turner said. “The Dyad classes are fun, and we get to learn about things that we never learned about. ... I really love that I get to learn new things.” Dyad consultants typically have near-total autonomy to determine what they’ll teach students in their classes every week and how to manage the classroom. They aren’t required to have teaching experience, although some told the Chronicle they had previously served as teachers or worked with HISD students in after-school programs.
Buchanan teaches his class on the school’s auditorium stage, as another teacher instructs an “Art of Thinking” class beside him on the stage. The two classes -- and their few dozen students each --- are separated only by a few thin room dividers, meaning the sixth-graders are hearing lessons from both classes at the same time.
