The Super Mario Bros. Movie debuted with a rotten Rotten Tomatoes score, but as time has passed it has crept ever closer to a fresh rating.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is creeping ever closer to an officially fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film, which is a collaboration between Nintendo and Despicable Me company Illumination Entertainment, is the first American theatrical feature to adapt the Mario games since the 1993 live-action flop Super Mario Bros. This iteration of the story stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and Jack Black as Bowser.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT When it premiered, the Super Mario Bros. Movie Rotten Tomatoes score was firmly rotten at 53 percent. However, Rotten Tomatoes has been updating the page with new reviews as more and more critics share their thoughts on the film and it has now increased to 59 percent. The film is just one percentage point from being officially fresh at 60 percent, something that requires just two or three more positive reviews.
Fresh or Not, Mario is a Juggernaut Considering how many reviews new wide-release movies get in the first month of their run, it's entirely possible that The Super Mario Bros. Movie could become officially fresh. However, the reverse is also true, if the bulk of those new reviews turn out to be negative. Regardless of what happens with the official score on the critical side, the film is a bona fide success commercially.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie box office has been seemingly unstoppable, breaking records left and right. The film started off strong by raking in the highest-grossing opening weekend of all time for an animated feature. However, it kept that hot streak going by quickly rising to become the highest-grossing video game adaptation as well.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie has now been in theaters for two-and-a-half weeks and is showing no signs of slowing down. It took No. 1 at the domestic box office this weekend for the third time in a row, with a fourth more or less guaranteed as it crosses the $400 million milestone today. It is also the highest-grossing film of 2023 worldwide, so a few percentage points in either direction on Rotten Tomatoes likely won't affect its trajectory much.
