Z2 Comics has become one of the biggest allies for musicians, working with a who's who of legends and artists on graphic novels. I spoke with three musicians and the team at Z2 to find out why they work so well together.
. And I knew that I could enter hip hop and rap music with the same sort of ideology and characters, and create a mission. You already had a villain. A villain was racism and the isms, so bias, prejudice, all that stuff. So combine it all up into the theme and then you got sort of like, but with a mission of trying to make social change within it. And so, doing this with the cast that made this, they wanted to do it, and I said,"It's a no-brainer.
Way: KISS had a Marvel comic, right? I think that was the nexus of it. But I think Anthrax, they were some of the forerunners of melding the two, the imagery they would use in their videos and their T-shirts, it was a lot of comic book imagery. In fact, yes, they had. They were some of the forefathers of the comic music marriage. But as a kid, I remember looking up to Anthrax because me and my brother were big comic book fans.
Baltin: Were there one or two issues in particular that you really felt were the most important to address inStaples: That's why there are so many different characters in so many different parts of the world, that we haven't explored yet, because, I feel like, it all depends on your point of view. Like no issue is greater than the other, because, we're all dealing with them in different ways.
Josh Bernstein: Yeah, probably of the four-headed service that is Z2, I'm the one with more of the music industry background. I came up through the magazine world and had a lot of experience booking these bands for festivals, award shows, concerts, photo shoots, whatnot. So a lot of those initial relationships and books we signed were folks that I worked with previously, including the management to the Doors and Charlie Parker, Black Veil Brides, Anthrax, very old friends of mine.
Bernstein: We found a couple of boxes we can check. If we see a heavy metal that does face painting, or a pop/punk band that has a strong fan club supporting it or strong female lead musician, like a Joan Jett or Blondie, there are certain music genres that perform better than others. And I will say our natural enthusiasm for these projects, because we're fans ourselves, really comes through in these conversations, where I feel like we're in the trenches with these artists.
Baltin: Also though when you do Charlie Parker and then you go to Chuck D or Damon Albarn musicians definitely notice the Parker book. So talk about the mix of the big-selling artists and the ones that are just special and cool for you?
