The Alabama Board of Education voted unanimously to take control of Sumter County schools today, meaning the local board is no longer in charge of decisions about personnel, finance or operations. Sumter County schools haven't yet started back this year.
“We’ve been engaged with them for some time on multiple issues,” Mackey said. “One of the things that brought this to a head,” Mackey said, “is they weren’t able to get and clear an audit from the Department of Public Examiners this year.” Mackey said their books were so far behind that he appointed a person several weeks ago to take over their bookkeeping.
Mackey said the district needs to begin planning to reduce the number of personnel that have been hired using COVID relief funding. Many county school systems are in the same position of having to figure out how and who to let go because federal relief funding runs out Sept. 30, 2024. “It’s always hard to make a decision such as this,” she said, “but when you look at it from the perspective of what’s best for children, it was obvious that at this point, we couldn’t just sit back and not consider what’s best for children.”
He gave them three weeks to respond in writing with a plan to resolve problems. Instead, on Aug. 3, the school board simply met and voted to agree to the intervention. They did not submit a plan.
