Will Shiv be able to break the toxic Roy-family pain cycle? How might Shiv and Tom psychologically harm their child? Four parenting experts weigh in on the fate of Succession's newest family member:
Throughout the series, Logan regularly “used psychological control—when parents toy with their children’s sense of intrinsic value in order to get the behavior they want. So they’re manipulating their kids and their sense of self-worth.” She points to Kendall’s statement to Hugo in “Church and State”—essentially a mission statement for the Roy family’s interpersonal dynamics: “Life isn’t nice. It’s contingent. People who say they love you also fuck you.
“Psychologically controlling parents show more love and affection for kids when they’re doing what they want,” Moyer continues. “We saw this with Logan—when he liked what [his kids] were doing, he would be a bit kinder to them. When they were disappointing him, he was a total asshole. Shiv said that in her eulogy too: When the sun shone, it was warm…the implication being that so often he didn’t. My fear is that Shiv is going to treat her child the same way.
She adds, “The problem with Shiv, and most of the characters in the show, is that they are completely self-absorbed. They were raised in this hyper-competitive environment, and pitted against each other. It was dangerous for them [to show any kind of empathy] because they really had to defend themselves.”
Mogel sees a small glimmer of hope for Shiv. From an evolutionary perspective, she explains that babies look adorable so that their parents will be able to tolerate waking up at all hours of the night to feed them and change their diapers. The Roy children—in spite of their complete lack of empathy—are humans, which means they biologically “have some instincts for love and connection…it just has to be activated.
