Two widely used statins, rosuvastatin and atorvastatin, are equally effective at preventing heart attacks, strokes and death in people with coronary artery disease.

Reviewed by Danielle Ellis, B.Sc.Oct 18 2023 But while rosuvastatin treatment is associated with lower cholesterol levels, it also carries a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than atorvastatin, finds a study published by The BMJ today.

To address this, researchers in Korea analysed the results of the LODESTAR clinical trial, involving 4,400 adults with coronary artery disease at 12 hospitals in South Korea. Several other safety outcomes, including development of type 2 diabetes, hospital admissions due to heart failure, major blood clots, and cataract surgery were also assessed. The researchers found no discernible differences between the two groups for all cause death , heart attack , stroke or any revascularisation .

The researchers acknowledge several study limitations including the fact that only Asian participants were included in this trial, and the three-year study period may have been relatively short to find longer term effects of two statin types.
