AMPTP studios are reportedly willing to push negotiations with SAG-AFTRA to 2024 if no deal is made to resolve the ongoing actors strike soon.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Studios in the AMPTP are reportedly poised to push actors strike negotiations with SAG-AFTRA into 2024 if no deal is made this week. The actors strike has been ongoing for 104 days as of writing, as Hollywood performers fight for fair pay, streaming residuals, and AI regulation among other goals. Although negotiations between studios and actors collapsed earlier this month, new negotiations have been ongoing since October 24.
Now, TheWrap reports that studios are allegedly willing to push negotiations with SAG-AFTRA to January 2024 if no deal with the actors guild can be reached by the end of this week. The possible decision is influenced by the fact that, if a deal is not made soon, new productions won't be able to start until 2024 anyway. Because of this, studios may push negotiations, since production will be stalled regardless.
How The Actors Strike Could Impact Hollywood In 2024 This isn't the first time studios have been reported to or accused of doing something that would make the strike last even longer. In September, SAG-AFTRA negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland accused AMPTP studios of prolonging the strike by refusing to talk with the guild. If this latest report comes to fruition, it means new and ongoing movie and TV projects under major studios won't restart production for quite some time.
The actors strike has already led to many films moving their release dates, such as Dune: Part Two getting pushed into 2024 and Mission: Impossible 8 moving into 2025. Due to the ongoing strike, actors are unable to promote new films, prompting studios to push their release dates in hopes the strike will be over by the time they come out. This trend is likely to continue into 2024, with more delays for major blockbusters that can't have press junkets with actors involved.
Despite this new report, SAG-AFTRA's negotiations with the AMPTP are seemingly ongoing, with no official word yet on how close to a deal they are. While the results of current negotiations won't impact production on projects the WGA is working on at the moment, they will delay those scripts from being turned into movies. The rest of this week should reveal how the negotiations play out, and what it will mean for film and TV next year.
