A student at Lewis & Clark College in Portland has died and two others injured after a pillar reportedly collapsed on Monday, hours after pupils saw the start of a new school semester.

Witnesses had reported that at least six people had been in three hammocks when the masonry column fell toward students, the bureau said. When first responders arrived, they confirmed that a 19-year-old man had died at the scene, while two 18-year-old women were injured. One of the women sustained injuries to one arm, while the other suffered abdominal injuries. Both were transported to a local hospital.
