A new study of how Puerto Rican forests were damaged by Hurricane Maria suggests forests across the Atlantic Tropics could become less biodiverse and become net carbon emitters as climate change drives more powerful storms.
It took nearly 11 months to restore power across the island and five months to fully restore the island's main water service. Almost 3,000 people were killed, according to official estimates.But beyond the human tragedy, a new study has found that Maria changed the makeup of the forests that cover more than half the island, with certain species declining after the storm and others increasing.
