Don't worry, StrangerThings fans - Netflix's won't abandon the binge release model for season 5 👀 Head of Scripted Series Peter Friedlander: '[T]his is how they’ve been watching that show, and I think to change that on them would be disappointing.' 👏
Netflix's head of scripted series, Peter Friedlander, says Stranger Things season 5 will stick to a binge release format. Netflix finally released Stranger Things season 4 a few weeks ago after numerous delays and setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The streaming platform cut the entire season into two volumes, with volume 1 releasing in May and volume 2 releasing in July.
Stranger Things season 4 is set in March of 1986 and picks up nine months after the events of the previous season. Season 4 sees the return of all the main characters, including Jim Hopper , who is trapped in a Soviet prison, as well as the rest of the gang from Hawkins. The separated friend group must face a new threat from the Upside Down, known as Vecna, who causes a string of mysterious deaths around the town.
For the fans of Stranger Things, this is how they’ve been watching that show, and I think to change that on them would be disappointing. To not give them exactly what they’ve been expecting — which is Stranger Things is a seasonal experience, they go through that with them — I think that it would be an abrupt change for the member.
Friedlander's comments come after Netflix reported a loss of 200,000 subscribers in Q1 of 2022, with a further 2 million projected in Q2. Following this news, Netflix is changing their approach to financing original movies and TV shows. For example, the streaming service is shifting focus away from producing big-budget, auteur-driven movies in favor of smaller projects. They've also begun experiments on possibly live-streaming certain programs.
The decision to split Stranger Things season 4 into two volumes is no doubt an attempt to hang onto subscribers as Netflix enters the next quarter. Considering the company projects to lose 2 million subscribers in Q2, they are trying everything they can to plug the holes. This recent news is both good for fans and a smart decision for Netflix. If the company were to release Stranger Things season 5 in an episodic format, they would run the risk of losing even more subscribers in the long run.
