The UK braces for Storm Agnes, with winds as fast as 75mph expected. The Met Office has warned of possible flooding, power cuts and falling trees, while the RNLI has said 'dangerous conditions' are likely.
Storms are named when they could have a medium to high impact in Ireland, the UK or the Netherlands in order to make public messaging easier.
Each of the three nations' metereological services have chosen seven names from an alphabetical list that excludes s q, u, x, y, and z. Ireland's forecaster Met Eireann chose to honour scientists with its names - the first of which is astronomer and science writer Agnes Mary Clerke. During her lifetime, 1842 to 1907, she wrote books on astrophysics, the contents of the universe, and its evolution.
Eoin Sherlock, head of the forecasting division at Met Eireann, said that they were"delighted to celebrate science and scientists" in this season's list of storm names.Storm names"connects our weather services more closely to the public, helping us in our mission to protect lives and property and ensuring the safety of our communities", he said.
