Residents in Prince George County, Maryland, can look forward to potentially partaking in a new universal basic income program that will provide recipients with cash payments every month.
The program will provide monthly payments to low-income families to support their basic needs, including paying for food and utilities, and allow them to spend the money in any way they see fit. In total, the program would last 24 months, or two years, according to the county.
"This is something being done in many jurisdictions around the country, including our neighboring jurisdictions, and I believe it will be beneficial for us in many ways. I also hope that our support of this measure provides a segue for policy change at the federal level,” she added. This guaranteed income program, approved on April 4, will be modeled after California's Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration program, which distributed payments of $500 to 125 recipients every month. Like Prince George County's program, the SEED program took place over the course of two years.
This program will cost $4 million, and half of it will be paid for by the county. The other half of the funding will come from the nonprofit Greater Washington Community Foundation.It is not yet known how much will be sent to recipients in these payments or how many recipients there will be. However, during a committee meeting held last month, Oriadha said the payments would range between $500 and $800 per month and around 200 people would be chosen as recipients, according to WTOP News.
