Republicans voted Wednesday to nominate Steve Scalise of Louisiana to serve as House speaker but are not done hashing out a way to ensure he'll get enough support to win the gavel in a vote on the House floor.

House business and most congressional action …Republicans voted Wednesday to nominate Steve Scalise of Louisiana to serve as House speaker but are not done hashing out a way to ensure he’ll get enough support to win the gavel in a vote on the House floor.
Mr. Scalise, the majority leader, won a majority of votes in the 221-member Republican conference, beating Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee. In order for Mr. Scalise, 58, to win enough votes to take the speaker’s gavel, lawmakers who back Mr. Jordan will have to get behind Mr. Scalise and agree to vote for him on the House floor, where both Republicans and Democrats vote for the speaker.
The vote comes a week after a small group of House Republicans sided with all Democrats in a historic vote to remove Rep. Kevin McCarthy, California Republican, from the speaker’s chair.
