You may remember the story of the amateur historian Philippa Langley helping to find the bones of Richard III in 2012, but Frears and Co bring to that news story a recognisably British warmth and eccentricity. Langley is played by Sally Hawkins, likeable as ever, though perhaps a little heavy-handed in her attempts to show fatigue .
Off work, separated from her husband and sick of being viewed as sick, Langley becomes obsessed with Shakespeare’s ungenerous depiction of the last Plantagenet king after seeing the playShe raids the local library for historical proof that he didn’t murder his nephews in the Tower, wasn’t a usurper, perhaps wasn’t even a hunchback.
