It all goes back to one movie.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Stephen King, an iconic horror novelist, comments on the state of cannibalism stories in movies and TV and why he thinks they've become so popular. Best known as the writer of books like Carrie, The Shining, It, Misery, and Pet Sematary, among many others, King is one of the most well-known and prolific writers of his time. Countless adaptations of his works have been made, including, most recently, The Boogeyman.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, King discusses his latest book, Holly, while also speaking more generally about the state of modern storytelling. When asked about why there have been so many cannibalism stories lately, King has an interesting theory as to why the concept has such a strong hold on audiences and storytellers. Check out his comment below:
"I think that it’s one of the final taboos. One of the interesting things about all of those creatures that have been spawned by George Romero, the zombies, the flesh-eating zombies, we say to ourselves, 'Oh, my God, that is the worst thing that I can possibly think of.'The State Of Cannibalism In Modern Movies & TV Cannibalism has long been the subject of fascination for audiences, with Romero's Night of the Living Dead largely starting the trend in 1968.
The zombie trend very much fits under the larger umbrella of cannibal storytelling, and AMC's The Walking Dead undoubtedly represents a major boom in this regard. The show was a cultural touchstone during its first few seasons, but its popularity has since waned. Zombies stories seemed to have become less popular in more recent years, but Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead was a major hit for Netflix and a sequel or two could well be on the way.
In terms of non-zombie cannibalism stories, viewers have been spoiled for choice, as King suggests. Cannibalism plays a large role in NBC's Hannibal, which sported a very dark tone during its three-season run, but it also was central to the likes of Fresh, which was more comedic, and Bones and All, a romance.
