Stephen A. Smith's first pitch at Yankee Stadium last week was something to forget

“I spoke to Derek Jeter before I threw the pitch,” he began, “because I was wearing his jersey. That’s my all-time favorite Yankee. El Capitán, that’s what I call him. And he was like, ‘Don’t f--- this up, man.’And that’s exactly what Smith did.

He took the mound in the Bronx and delivered a pathetic 50-foot lob that one-hopped its way to the catcher. Then, wearing an embarrassed smirk, he took the walk of shame to the catcher to shake hands and get the ball as a memento. All the while, Yankees fans showered him with boos Smith, who claims to have not thrown a baseball since junior high school, described the moment he arrived at the mound.

“I’m wearing sneakers, I don’t have on cleats, and I’m wearing my white Christian Louboutin sneakers with red bottoms, alright Buster? I step foot on the dirt and it’s slippery. That’s the first thing I noticed,” he said. “And I know that the mound is only 10 inches off the surface, but it felt like 30. Then I turned around and looked at home plate and I said, ‘oh my God. What have I done?’ That plate looked like a mile away.

Smith’s colleagues wasted no time to dish it to Smith, who’s a hot take machine. Shannon Sharpe, who traded FS1′s Skip Bayless for Smith, offered the best assessment of the throw: “Disgraceful.”
