The Rams' Eddie Kotal was more than a magnificent scout. He was a pioneer who made scouting 'the most important part of the NFL.'

When the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s coach/contributor committee met this summer, it chose former coach Buddy Parker as its Class of 2024 finalist … and hallelujah. Parker should’ve been elected years ago. But it didn’t act on another Hall-of-Fame worthy candidate who’s been overlooked for far too long, and that’s former L.A. Rams’ scout Eddie Kotal.A pioneer of NFL scouting, Kotal wasn’t one of 12 semifinalists considered in August, and that’s hard to fathom.

Hired by Reeves in 1946, he and he Rams’ owner developed a scouting system that was so innovative, so sophisticated and so far ahead of its time, that when the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to L.A. in 1958 they approached Reeves for advice on establishing a scouting network for major-league baseball. “The Rams made all of us look like we were from the ‘boonies’, “ former Chicago Cardinals’ personnel director Ray Geraci told author Cliff Cristl in “Sleepers, Busts and Franchise Makers: The Behind-the-Scenes Story of the Pro Football Draft.” “Everybody tried to emulate them.”

The 1950 Rams set so many franchise and individual records that, when we asked historians on this site to name the game’s best-ever offense, they chose the 1950 Rams over the 1989-90 San Francisco 49ers in a photo finish (. One year later, the 1951 Rams won the NFL championship with an all-rookie offensive line.

Eddie Kotal found most of those players, and the league took notice. In fact, when Tex Schramm, who worked with the Rams, left to become GM with the expansion Dallas Cowboys in 1960, he took the Rams’ scouting system with him. Tex Schramm is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. So is Rams’ owner Dan Reeves. But Eddie Kotal? Not in the conversation.
