State rep: Align state curricula to close the achievement gap | Opinion

The future takes root in the classroom, and offering our students and teachers accessible, innovative and high-quality instructional materials will improve outcomes for the 5.5 million students in Texas schools.

The bill would set out parameters for TEA to develop an opt-in gold-standard curriculum for students across the state. Additionally, it would incentivize districts to close the achievement gap by aligning classroom instruction with TEKS grade-level standards.

This initiative presents a valuable opportunity for our students while alleviating the workload of teachers, who are working an average of 54 hours per week, according to a 2022 survey by the EdWeek Research Center, with as many as 10 of those hours focused on curriculum development. By providing teachers with fully developed instructional materials and lesson plans, we enable them to concentrate on honing lesson delivery, engaging with parents and fostering a positive classroom environment.

The investments we make in this curriculum today are investments in the futures of our 5.5 million students and the state’s economy. Let’s give students a better chance to succeed in school and beyond. Let’s provide teachers with the relief they deserve. And let’s give parents full access to their child’s education.
